ABOUT PILATES

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a set of full-body exercises that focus on the movements of the body, originally developed by German fitness guru Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. He developed his techniques by practising gymnastics, bodybuilding, diving and other fitness activities, as well as studying Eastern and Western Philosophies.

The concept of ‘Contrology’ is at the centre of the practice of Pilates. This refers to Joseph Pilates’ belief that rather than targeting individual muscle groups, exercise should engage the entire body. Pilates is founded on six guiding principles: Concentration, Breath, Centring, Precision, Control, and Flow.

The exercises increase muscle strength and endurance, as well as improving balance, posture, and flexibility. Pilates can complement other sports or training exercises by reducing the risk of injury. Practising Pilates can also relieve stress, with a greater connection between body and mind providing you with a general sense of well-being.

How is Yoga different from Pilates?

While Pilates draws on some of the techniques of Yoga, it is very much a different practice. Whereas Yoga tends to focus on spiritual wellbeing and relaxation techniques, Pilates focuses on strengthening the body and overall wellbeing.

In Pilates, the torso and abdominal muscles generate the energy which powers the body, which makes it particularly effective for relieving back pain and mobility issues.
